Bronx Zoo Wishes Everyone a Green Christmas

The Bronx Zoo normally goes all out with a night time holiday light show. This year, they’ve decided to go green and turn the event into a daytime event without the energy burning lights. They’ll have Clydesdale horses, reindeer and craft workshops where kids can make eco-friendly ornaments. The zoo says moving the event to the daytime will reduce its carbon footprint by an amount equal to the annual emissions of a three-person household.

It’s nice to see a zoo putting its “money where its mouth is.” Too many zoos preach conservation and yet it’s normally hard to find a recycling bin to toss your $2 coke can into. Even though the Bronx Zoo is probably using this event as a gimmick, it’s time for zoos to step up and every little bit helps.

I expect in the next few years to see more eco-friendly exhibits and events at zoos from recycling bins (why aren’t they already at EVERY zoo?), to exhibits about sustainable agriculture and buildings with ecofriendly features. Some zoos have already done a little bit of this, but not enough of them. In order for us to continue to preach green living as the way to save the species, we need to actually practice green living in our facilities.

We also need a clearer understanding of these issues so we can communicate them to our visitors. I’ve heard common myths given out by zoo staff/volunteers before. Even if the myth is common, zoo present themselves as the stewards of the environment. We should present them with facts instead of conjecture. We should arm ourselves with the opposing viewpoints so we can speak intelligently to them.

We all know that we’re constantly being judged.  If we tell people to turn off the lights and then have million light displays all winter . . . well, you know.

Glad to see the Bronx Zoo is stepping up.
